AUSTIN, TX (January 22, 2017) – The Austin Huns Elite began their 2017 season and opened the Red River Rugby Conference (RRRC) on Saturday, January 21 in electrifying fashion, defeating the Dallas Harlequins 68-5 at Glencoe Park in Dallas. Next, the Huns will take on seven-time national XV’s champion, San Diego’s O.M.B.A.C. Rugby, in their first home game of the season set for Saturday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m. at Huns Field (4107 Nixon Lane, Austin, Texas).

“1, 2, 3, BROTHERS!” screamed the Austin Huns as they took the field on Saturday for the first time after four months of preseason training. “It has been a long pre-season, longer than most of us are accustomed to, but it has been effective and exciting. Our team was excited to get onto the field, and it showed,” said Team Captain Lomani Tongotongo.

The Austin Huns’ excitement showed early in the match as the Huns received two quick offsides penalties to start the game, which marched the Harlequins deep into scoring territory just minutes into the match. However, the Huns showed poise and kept the Harlequins out of the try zone just meters out from the line!

Once the team settled, the attack was very effective. The players were able to execute set piece plays despite the pressure put on by the Harlequins.

Despite the decisive victory, “It was a hot and cold day,” said Lomani. “When we stuck to our patterns and structure, the game flowed very well.” Lomani was one of the many players who scored, dotting down two tries of his own.

Saturday was a great win for the Austin Huns. “It was a typical first match after a long pre-season. The team was a little nervous and jittery to start the match, but it’s not how you start its how you finish. The team kept chipping away at the Harlequins, and by the second half, it was one-way traffic for the Huns. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I’m happy with the win and look forward to our upcoming matches,” said Austin Huns Head Coach Eugene Eloff.

The Austin Huns second team also competed Saturday, and much like their Elite Team, dominated the Harlequins second side, winning by a landslide with a score of 85-0.

The next three Huns games will all be home games at Huns Field, and in addition to O.M.B.A.C. Rugby they will also play the Dallas Reds and long-time local rival the Austin Blacks. Huns home games are exciting and entertaining for rugby and sports fans, but also the greater Central Texas community, including families with children. Each game day at Huns Field offers a full afternoon experience in addition to the thrilling matches, including live music, delicious food from Casa Chapala and beverages, as well as plenty of space for kids to run around and enjoy the day while parents watch the game.
