Austin Huns Elite Sweep Austin Blacks Final Huns Season Home Game Against Richmond RFC Saturday, April 29
Austin, TX (April 24, 2017) – Saturday was a rugby day in Austin, Texas, as the Austin Huns traveled to Burr Field to battle local rivals Austin Blacks in their final meeting of the season. It was a day filled with intensity, passion, and excitement from the sidelines to the pitch. With playoff hopes on the horizon, each game was more critical than the last, each try and tackle more exciting than the previous. Austin Huns Elite put an exclamation mark on the day after stunning the home team, winning 31-30, and sweeping the Blacks this season in the Red River Rugby Conference.
Austin Huns Elite The Austin Huns had a week of regrouping after coming off a crushing loss to the Glendale Raptors. The Huns made significant roster adjustments due to injuries of starters, such as top try-scorer Hanco Germishuys. While the Huns made changes to a slightly diminished roster, the Austin Blacks added top-talent players like USA Eagle Chris Baumann. Austin Huns started the first half cold, dropping the opening kickoff lead to the Austin Blacks getting into striking distance early and scoring in their opening position. For the first 30 minutes of the match, the Blacks looked to be in complete control, racking up 17 uncontested points, and the Austin Huns searched for an answer. That response came by way of flanker Kyle Breytenbach, who blocked the Black’s exiting-kick, scooped and scored the Austin Huns first try just minutes before the half.
After receiving some inspirational words from team captain and center Lomani Tongotongo, the Austin Huns tighten their boots, tucked the ball, and started playing heads-up rugby. The Huns rallied and scored 19 uncontested points to start the second half, taking a 19-17 lead. The Austin Blacks retook the lead with a 3-point penalty kick and a try, giving them a 25-19 lead midway through the second half. Just minutes later, center Joedee Reyes powers over two defenders, scoring a try and bringing the Huns within one point of the Blacks. With a 25-24 lead and twelve minutes left in the match, the Blacks looked to put the game away, scoring yet another try, this time by USA Eagle Chris Baumann. With less than 90 seconds remaining in the match, the Austin Huns marched down Burr Field and scored the last try of the match, in the corner by 8-man Deon Minnaar. The Huns were now down 30-29 with less than a minute left in the game when fly-half Timothy Guillimin lined up for the game-winning kick. With the Austin Blacks’ crowd screaming just meters behind him, Tim drilled the kick through the middle of the post, silencing the home crowd, and emptying the bleachers as he gives the Austin Huns a 31-30 win over the Austin Blacks.
“It was a hard, tough battle at the Blacks ground, Burr Field, as they [Austin Blacks] gave us a run for our money,” said Austin Huns Head Coach Eugene Eloff. “Being down 17 points and coming back to win the game shows the unbelievable character of a team that is showing a champion side. It takes a special team to play catch-up and win the game. Most teams in this situation give up, but this team saw it through. It was hard rugby, and it shows that Austin is very healthy with the high standard of rugby displayed on the pitch. There were a lot of hard hits, good running, and very few opportunities to capitalize. I am very proud of the boys, and now we line up for a chance to win the Red River Rugby Conference. We will take it humbly and will be ready for battle this week, while not letting this win go to our head.”
Austin Huns D2 The Austin Huns Division 2 looked to knock off the top-seed, Austin Blacks. The Huns dominated the majority of the match. At one point, the Austin Huns lead 22-10, with 30 minutes lead in the second half. The Blacks rallied back and ended the game in a 22-22 tie.
Austin Huns D3 The Austin Huns Division 3 battled the Austin Blacks D3. It was a hard-fought match down to the final seconds, but the Blacks bested the Austin Huns, 55-14.
